DOG BLOG TIME!!!

I volunteer at the Oregon Humane Society.  I primarily spend my time  with the dogs. I am an active 'Outreach Program' volunteer who take the animals to different events and places throughout the Portland area. The idea of the Outreach Program is to show off the wonderful animals, spread the word about adopting the wonderful animals that are at the Shelter, the Volunteer opportunities and other wonderful attributes that the Shelter has.  I also go and spend time with the dogs in the kennels, walking them, loving them, and basically spending time with them.

Support your local animals shelter. There are many ways to do this.  My way is just one of the ways a person can volunteer and help out our beloved pets.

I enjoy my time with the animals and volunteering at the Shelter, so I thought I would post my experiences and time that I've shared with them. The views I express are mine and mind alone.  Remember, I am a volunteer and not an employee of the Oregon Humane Society.

This weekend was the Oregon Humane Society's annual Adopt a Pet Fair. Lots of fun stuff going on, such as local bands playing, Balloon guy walking around making balloon hats and sculptures (better that The Puppetry of the Penis!) for the kids, clowns that juggle. Tons of local Mascots from sports teams, a Pet Psychic, an Animal Communicator (never had a chance to speak to her), Search and Rescue Dog demonstrations, face painters, tons of cookies, candies, chips and other salty and sugary things to keep you going. :)

The weather was great and it brought in a couple of local TV News crews on Saturday, which brought in even more people Today. My job ALL weekend was I was helping with Adoptions. In the past people, were having to wait up to 2 hours to go through the adoption process, and since we Outreach Volunteers have experience with Adoptions and know the paperwork process, we offered our services to the Adoption Office. It helped a great deal and we figured people were only waiting an average of 30 minutes this weekend!

I met a lot of very interesting people this weekend. Many had to get a crash course in how much time and money it takes to take care of a pet. Especially dogs. I almost scared the pants off of a young couple yesterday, but they were clueless about the type of dog they were adopting (Australian Shepherd) and how much money it takes to at least feed a medium size dog like that.

One of the questions on the Adoption Application was, "How much money are you willing to spend a year on this animal?" It's not really a trick question, but it gives the adoption counselors a feeling on how well the new owners know what it takes to keep an animal.

This young couple come in and fill out the adoption application for "Pookie". He is a 2 year old cutie pie Aussie Shepherd. In answer the above question, they answer $100-$200.

I ask, "Have you ever had an Australian Shepherd?"

"No, it's our first dog". The girl says with a giggle. The vein in my neck starts to bulge.

"You understand they are herding dogs and have a high prey drive. They need to keep busy. Even have a 'job" I tell them. Pookie was turned into Animal Control in Central Oregon for killing livestock. His time ran out at the Shelter and he was given a second chance up here in 'Da Big City'. No livestock here!

"Herding dog? A job? What do ya mean?" She asks. She cocks her head

One of the other Volunteers who is sitting near us and reading a magazine, puts the magazine down and gives me a look. She is waiting for me to give them my 'Rhonda Herding Dog 101 Crash Course.' I explain about the herding and prey drive in Aussies and Border Collies and their mind always turned on 24 hours a day. They need things to do. Yada yada yada. Left alone for long periods of time, they can become destructive, destroy things, dig holes outside, escape, kill things, etc. They gotta have outlets like lots of walks, tennis balls, and frisbees. maybe even a refresher obedience class or two to get yourself bonded with him.

"Were you planning on keeping him outside for long periods of time by himself?" I ask.
"Uh yah." The guy says.
"How long do you think?" I ask. Thinking maybe they're thinking a hour or so.
"Well, 8 hours or so while we are at work." He says.

Other volunteer shifts in her chair, coughs and then gets up and walks out.

I explain that that amount of time alone by himself outside, especially at first after he is brought home, might not be a good idea. he could get bored and try to escape. If they do plan on keeping him outside a lot, then he needs either a companion, or lots and lots of play and chew toys. I gave them ideas for toys and what to do for him.

"Oh we plan on buying him lots of toys and taking him for lots of walks." the gal says.
"Okay, good." I tell them. In the back of my mind, I'm thinking, 'they don't know what they are in for, and oh, I've heard that before.'
I ask them the Money question.
"Oh yah. I think probably about $100-$200 dollars." The gal says. The other volunteer that had left, had come back in with some food and started coughing and choking when she said this.
"Let me ask you this, and I'm not trying to scare you or talk you out of this particular dog, but you need to be aware that it could cost more than that amount in just one vet visit... what would happen if say in 2 or 3 months he gets a bad ear infection, an abcessed tooth, or he escapes and gets hit by a car. Would you be able to put forth the money to fix the problems?" I ask
The woman begins to look troubled. "How much would a vet vist for an ear infection cost?" she asks. I give her a rough estimate. The guys like, 'yah yah, it's okay.'
I then explain that for his size of dog, they'd be spending atleast $20-30 a month on food.
"How often do you feed a dog this size? Is once a day okay? Mornings or Nights?" The woman asks. She's beginning to finally realize the enormity of the matter. He's just not a cute dog that kissed her on the face alot when they met. I give them tons of suggestions, recommend they buy books on Aussie Shepherds and Herding dogs. go to obedience school with him, etc. I tell them to call the Shelter anytime if they have any issues.

The adoption is completed and I go get Pookie for them. Help them out the car and then go back to the adoption office to fill in my concerns on their paperwork, so when the adoption is placed in the computer, my concerns will be there.

I believe we had close to 80 or 90 adoptions this weekend, with lots and lots of kittens and all the puppies we had (18 puppies) adopted.

Oh and Lucky, the Akita Pitbull mix that I liked (and thought looked like a hyena) so much got adopted!

Yahoo! My two week mission has been completed! Pee Wee the Akita/Greyhound mix got adopted yesterday! This was the dog I took to two Outreaches last weekend, and filled out a huge Volunteer Observation form on and left my number in case anyone had questions.

Saturday I picked up a dog named Pee Wee from the Shelter to go to a local PetSmart for the day. Pee Wee is an 80 lb. Akita Greyhound mix. He's not so pee wee, but I like the name. It fits him. :) I love his curly tail, and the way he cocks his head when you talk to him and scratch his neck.

In the Shelter he is just insane. Bark Bark Bark Bark and more barking. He HATES being there. He went into a foster home for 3 weeks while he recouperated from having a fatty tumor removed from behind one ear. He loved being at the Foster Home and was a perfect gentleman. But that time came to an end and he had to come back to the Shelter. More Bark Bark Bark and more Bark!

When we take him outside, he turns into this quiet, well mannered dog. So, I decided to take him to PetSmart to get him out. He was so good! He loves car rides. He loves other dogs, he loves people, and he doesn't care about cats. He was so good. I fell in love with him. He just looks so dorky.

So, I hung out with Pee Wee, 2 kittens and the kittens' foster mom, who had the personality of a slug. I had more companionship from Pee Wee than I did from her... oh well. No interest in Pee Wee at PetSmart, but one of the kittens got adopted. Pee Wee loves to have his chin and neck scratched. As I was driving down the road, I was scratching his neck with my right hand. I looked over and his eyes were closed. He was in Heaven. :)

So, yesterday I take pictures for the website in the morning, and then at noon I met up with another volunteer to transport 4 dogs to "Bark in the Park". One home game a year, the minor league baseball team in Portland has a home game where owners can bring their dogs, donate food to OHS and other shelters. There are lots of fun things that go one at the park.

So, I pick out Pee Wee to take again, and we also took Chloe a 7 year old black lab, Otis a 5 year German Short Hair Pointer, and Brandon the year old Blue Heeler Aussie Shepherd mix. Wow, he was the life of the party. He played with every puppy there and was very gentle. Pee Wee was another of his playmates. If one or the othe wanted to go somewhere, the other followed. If one played with another dog, the other wanted to be included or would bark.

Otis got adopted by the 2nd inning! :lol A couple was there with their (cough cough) Pomeranian. What a sight! The Pom and Otis got along great so off he went. Other people would come by our booth with their dogs, and let us know that their dog was from the Humane Society. That's always nice to see.

There was interest in all the other dogs, but Otis was the only to get adopted. I was soooo close in getting Pee Wee adopted, but the guy that came by twice to look at him never came back. It bummed me out. But we had a great day and the dogs were able to get out for the day.

It's been awhile since I blogged about the dogs at the Oregon Humane Society. I thought I'd post something tonight... I'm exhausted. Early last week 500+ dogs were found on the property of an elderly couple in Eastern Oregon. The majority of them were very unsocial, since they were not around people. Many rescue agencies went over to Malheur County and did what they could for the dogs. Many went to Idaho since the home was very close to the Idaho border and there were several rescue agencies that could take many dogs. Over 100 had to be put to sleep since they were in such poor health. Most of these dogs lived in there own squalor. Nasty stuff!

80 dogs were brought back to Portland to the Oregon Humane Society last Thursday and they have been going through temperment testing, getting spayed or neutered (NONE of them were) and being taken care of.  Let me tell you that they are ALL a mess emotionally and physically. Very sad stuff. The ones that have some social skills were put up for adoption today (about a dozen) and were out amongst the masses today.

I went in after work today (Oh, and after I had my taxes done. ) to start taking pictures of these animals for the website. I've included one at the bottom of this post. The three in the picture are Crystal, Josie (black in back) and Zola. Atleast they either weren't growling at me or cowering. A whole kennel quad is locked and no one is able to go in there unless you have a 'special' badge. Some of these dogs just break my heart. I'm sure this old couple thought they were doing a good deed, but BAM! once they rescued a couple of boys and girls, everything went out the window.

Seems like long time between "Dog Blogs" lately, but I've been really busy and have too busy lately to post long thought out threads.

I've done very little dog walking lately, and have spent my time going out on Adoption Outreach events to Portland Trail Blazer games, Petco's, PetSmarts, and 2 Sundays a month taking photos of new animals for the Website.

The Blazer games have been a blast. Even if the dogs are not put 'on hold' that night, it sure gives us the opportunity to share info about the Humane Society to the public. And people aren't even mad if a dog does a 'ploppy' on the floor. "ooooh poor thing...". The clean up staff are called quickly and everybody is fine.

Some of the animals arrive at the shelter and no one knows their names. They are given names by the staff, like two bunnies that came in recently. 'Mista Wiskas' and 'Widdle Wiskas'. PRetty funny! 'Amos' the Black lab puppy who was at the latest Blazer game... he was renamed 'Diablo'. He was quite the hand full! Could you image what he was like if we renamed him Diablo? But he was adopted very quickly!

Another one who received a new name when she arrived at the Shelter was 'Nancy'. She was also at the latest Blazer game outreach. She was a 4 year Black Lab, who was just the sweetest girl. The Outreach Coordinator handed me her leash and said, "This is Nancy." Well, when I tried calling her I came to the very quick conclusion that 'Nancy' was not her real name. She never came to Nancy. I think her name was 'Come, want a bisquit?' She was adopted 2 days after the Blazer game by someone who saw her there.

Yesterday we had quite the party at the local Petco. It was just supposed to be another gal and I, but a Foster Mom brought a kitty, and another Volunteer who decided to take out her favorite dog for the day stopped by for a couple of hours. So.... there was four of us with 3 kitties - 'Orson', the black 4 month old kitten, 'Zeek' the 4 year old black kitty, and 'McDuff' who is an 8 year old black and white kitty. Plus 'Noble', a 3 year old Black Lab Collie mix who knows ALL of his commands and loves to hug, plus 'Spud', an 8 year old - get this, Saint Bernard Dalmation mix!!

'Spud' is a big guy. Very gentle hearted who is a very big guy with the head, jowls and slobber of Saint Bernard, but short white fur with big black spots!!! I really love him. Neither of the dogs were adopted, and 'Spud' was going back out to another Adoption Outreach today.

His story... Kristen the volunteer who had him out yesterday, is in Boxer Rescue. She found out that 'Spud' was at a shelter in Eastern Oregon, and they had him listed as part Boxer. This shelter that had him was going to put him to sleep because they were out of room and he had been there for some time. Who knows what 'Some time' means... anyway, the ORegon Humane Society has a 'Second Chance' program where other shelters can send dogs there if they've 'run out of time' at a shelter. OHS will not put down a dog just because of space.

So anyway, Kristen learns about 'Spuds' story and drives 4 hours east to go pick him up with the okay from OHS to bring him over to Portland to stay for some time until the Boxer Rescue group can get him a foster home. When she gets there, she's like "what part of this dog is boxer?" But she has fallen in love with him and brings him back here. He is such a sweet boy!!

You won't believe this, but I actually sat for two hours and listened to an animal communicator today! Her name is Kate Bast and she lives in the Portland area. She was at OHS today giving a short lecture on what she does and how she does it. I went in very skeptical, but found that she was very genuine and had some interesting things to say.

A local Golden Retriever Rescue group was sponsoring her talk, and there were several people there with their Golden Retrievers. She agreed to 'speak' to one in advance during her talk. One of the foster women who was fostering a Golden named 'Skye', or now she was being called 'Blondie' was brought up. The woman wanted Kate to ask the dog some questions.

One was which name she liked. 'Skye' or 'Blondie'. The other question had to do with whether or not the dog was happy in the home she was in, or would she be happier with another family. This woman was considering adopting her.

Kate first (I wont go into the specifics of the 'hows' she did it) 'asked' the dog which name she preferred. She told us that the dog preferred being called 'Skye' because 'a young one' gave her that name and would softly sing it in her ear all the time. She said that 'Blondie' wasn't as "soft" and sounded weird.

Kate then asked her if she liked living with Jane or would she rather go to a different home. Jane was thinking of keeping her, but she wasn't sure if 'Skye' would want to stay with her. Kate then told us that 'Skye' wanted very much to stay with Jane and wanted to know when the 'young ones' would be coming to play next.

Jane doesn't have kids, but has two nieces, a nephew and a grand daughter that visit often, and this is to whom 'Skye' was referring to. She loves children, or 'young ones' as she calls them. And then she made the comment that she wanted Rufus to not be so 'Big'.

Kate explained that when an animal refers to sizes, they are talking about energy. Turns out Jane has a Mastiff named 'Rufus' who is 130 lbs and has a lot of energy. He's only 2 and 'Skye' is 6 and gets tired of 'Rufus' knocking her around! It was pretty funny.

Well, I guess that's all for now. I'm tired, I gotta go to bed... Hot chocolate with marshmellows for all!

I LOVE that 'new' puppy breath smell! It smells like corn chips.

I was at the shelter taking pictures of the new dogs for the website, and there was two sets of puppies there. Not just litters of 2 or 3, but 5 puppies about 2 -3 months old. Lucky me got to play with all the puppies, get sloppy kisses and take pictures of them. Oooohhh how I love the smell of new puppies!!!!!

Saturday was the "3rd Annual Oregon Humane Society Pet Telethon", which is the only telethon held for animals in the west. Or something like that... It was a fun time had by all!  It was held at the local CBS studios and we basically were told that we could wander everywhere except into the Anchor room.

Some volunteers manned the phones taking pledges/donations, some were runners bring back the pledges from the phones, some were gophers running messages back and forth between different sections, and I was in the back in the "Gift Center" verifying large donations. I had fun calling people back up thanking them for their donations and verifying the amount. I would get great stories from some how they had adopted their cat or dog 30 years ago from the Humane Society (Okay, so I exaggerate) and it was their best friend for years....

A local radio host was the Host of the Telethon and two anchors from the TV Station were there to read Challenges and introduce stories and commercials. There were dogs running around all over the place. Some sat quietly next to their owners while they were on the phones so they were shown on TV, whiles others would accidentally get away and you would see it wander across the TV viewing space.

They had one of the anchors at the Shelter who they would go to occasionally to show adoptable animals.  The Shelter had a record day and adopted out over 50 animals, which is a lot in one day. There were a few people who actually went to the Shelter to drop off donations and pick up an animal. There was one gentleman who adopted a dog and left a $3000 check! There were some very generous people!
I was at the Humane Society yesterday doing my dog walking and it was nice to see that it was only half full after the weekend event.

There is this very beautiful Dalmatian named Willie available for adoption right now. He has one blind eye from being thrown from a truck in the past (car accident). He is a very sweet dog that once he trusts you, he warms up to you. He is also very smart. He knows how to sit, shake, lay down AND sit up! I found the sit up by accident... I was having him sit and stay, and I just happened to say Sit up, and he immediately sat up and kept 'waving' at me like he was shaking. He's a good boy. Like all Dalmatians he as spots all over him, but the whole right side of his face is all black. He is a very pretty dog. You can see a picture of him at: www.oregonhumane.org/featured_dogs.asp

There is this sweet Beagle boy named Bill there now. He is 5 and has a bad skin condition. Beagles can have very bad flea allergies and skin sensitivity if not taken care of. This poor boy was not taken care of. Ajax has bad flea allergies so I know the agony he has been going through. Bill was in Foster Care for a few weeks getting back into shape before going to the Shelter.

His back half still looks a little raggy, but he's come a long way and we went for a nice walk yesterday and then I sat with him for quite awhile both outside and then back in his kennel. His back end was still quite sensitive so while I was sitting on his blanket, he would come lay his front legs across me and let me pet his front 'end'. He's a sweet little tri color Beagle.

Koda is a 9 month old BIG Black Lab mix. She is a very strong young girl who takes you for a walk. She has a Pet Pal who is working with her on her 'manners. She can play fetch until she just passes out. She will go after the ball, run back as fast as she can, drop the ball at your feet and sit panting, waiting for you to throw it again. She did not want to stop, so the ball came back in with her.

Oh my gosh, there is a 3 year old yellow lab named Pringle who is just BIG. He needs to go on a diet - he is huge. He is a sweet boy that loves to be outside and walking. He loves to play ball, which maybe he was just introduced to at the Shelter.

There are some absolutely beautiful dogs at the Humane Society right now. You can see them at the link I gave you above.... Bonnie, Laser, Rusty, Buster, Jerry, Travis, Roxy.... Oh, and can't forget Kitty who a sweet Shepherd mix who doesn't have her picture up. What a love!

I kind of have to start out on a sad note, because I don't want to end with it... One of the dogs that I'm fond of will probably have to be Euthanised within the next couple of days. Kastor is a big serious Shepard mix who has been at the shelter for about 3months. He unfortunately is stressing out way too much, and Shelter life has not agreed with him.

He came in pretty wild and not in control. He is two years old and was given no training by his previous owners. His 'PetPals' have worked hard with him and with patience he has learned to walk really well on a leash, to sit, stay and lay down, but he has this fight or flight instinct when he is in a kennel and is freaked out by kids who come near the kennel. And since he can't fly anywhere, his instinct when a hyper loud child comes near and puts a hand or finger in between the bars, is to bite. He's now done this twice and he is back in bite quarantine. He is no longer able to be put back out 'in front', and no rescue groups will take dogs that have bitten. He is a really good dog when not around children, and it broke my heart when I found out he bit a second time. I was very close to seeing if I could take him home - a "NO PTS", which means at the last resort, a volunteer or staff member can say, "No, don't put it to sleep I'll take him home." But it said that his prey drive was really strong and he chases cats, so I couldn't risk it. I can't come to everyone's rescue.

The Shelter has to follow some very strict quidelines when it comes to adopting out animals, especially dogs that have aggressive tendencies.  I completely understand and agree with the decisions they make there.

I do have good news! A friend from work adopted an absolutely wonderful dog from the Shelter two nights ago. She was looking for a friend for her cat, who loves dogs. So I found a young guy named Champ who I thought fit the bill perfectly. He is a incredibly gorgeous and stunningly beautiful Rotty mix who is half the size of a full size Rotty. He has beautiful features... I can't say enough about this dog. He is 2 years old and quiet. He was brought into the Shelter because 'they just couldn't take care  of him any more.' The young kids were always hitting him, he barked a lot, and tore things up when left alone. Well, dogs will tear things up if left alone for 14 hours a day with nothing to do in the house! GRRRR, people just amaze me!

This dog is so nice. As soon as I saw him on Monday I took him outside and walked him around, found that he was fantastic on a leash, he listened very well, was of course head shy because the previous kids would bop him on the head, but he sat and laid down on command. He didn't bark at the other dogs and loved to have his chest and tummy rubbed. I called my friend and she brought over her niece and nephew to see how he handled them. He loved them. She put a hold on him and she picked him up the next day on Tuesday after getting the house ready.

She said that as soon as she brought him in the house Tuesday night, her cat Bumper ran up to him and head butted 'Hi'. They became instant friends! He loves chasing Tennis balls, and is great with her niece and nephew. She took him on a walk over to the nearby Boys and Girls Club with a bunch of treats and gave them to the kids, and they all had a ball teaching him how to shake and just getting him used to 'good kids' again. She said the only bad thing is, 'He jumps up on the couch and instantly begins snoring'. To me that's funny.

There are some really beautiful German Shepherds at the Shelter right now. I walked three today... Choy, Stanley and Max. Such serious dogs German Shepherds... but well behaved. Loves the Saluki mix is still there. She's a wild woman who I'm trying, along with a few others to get her to walk on a leash without pulling your shoulder out of socket. She is a beautiful dog, but wacky. Remember, she is the one that does not like to have water touch her feet. She won't go near the kiddie pools when they are full. No way, no how. She loves to fetch balls, but if they land in the pool, she won't go get it.

Cruella the Red Cross Bull Dog mix with the spiked collar is still there. She gets a lot of attention by us, so she doing okay not being with her owner full time. I love her 'coarse' bark. She sounds like she's smoked 20 packs of cigarettes. She's so cute.

There is Shylo the Retriever mix who is beautiful and loves to play fetch. He is really good about bringing the ball back and dropping it right at your feet and then sitting down to wait until you throw it. he does this until YOU are about to drop... this dog has love and energy that I wish I could tap into.

Bonnie is a beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. She is a powerful dog who only uses her power for good actually the only time she has shown her true strength gvbbbbbbbb............................................(Lucy is walking acroy6ssuu th4e 5555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 keyboard) is when she doesn't want to go back in her kennel. It usually takes two people to get her to go back in. She's not mean in the least, just stubborn. I really like her. She would be great to go hiking or camping with.

This Saturday I am taking part in a Telethon benefiting the Oregon Humane Society. A local TV Station (KoinTV -CBS - Channel 6) is hosting a Telethon from Noon to 4 where all the money raised goes to the Shelter. I won't be seen on TV thank god, but I'll be working in the back ground... should be fun!

Jambalaya for everyone!!

Yep, it's the 15th and payday!

Some dogs are so lucky! They have families 'fighting' over them! If a dog has not been fixed yet, and they are scheduled for a snip a few days away, people can put holds on the animal until they are ready. Animals do not leave the Shelter until they have been fixed. I've seen animals with 5 holds on them.

Anyway, there was this sweet dog named Lucky who I took for a walk last Thursday. His paperwork said he was a St. Bernard mix. He has St. Bernard colors but more of a body of a Shepherd - not as big as a St. Bernard. He was so sweet and mellow and just loved going for a walk. He didn't pull at all and was just a cool boy. He loved playing ball too. It wasn't until I got back to his kennel and looked closer at his paperwork. This boy was not done growing yet!! He is ONLY 5 months old and the other mix is Great Dane! I enjoyed playing with him.

Yesterday while I was at the Shelter, I was passing his kennel and a family with 4 kids were looking at him. They were the 'Second Hold'. The 'First Hold' had put him on hold until he was neutered (which was done yesterday morning) and could take him home the day after - today.

Well, the family wanted to see him again, so I took him into one of the quiet meet rooms so they could see him. The kids were all excited, but Mom and Dad were holding back. They wanted to know more about him, so I left to go back to his kennel to get his paperwork. Well, guess who was standing at his kennel reading his paperwork? 'Hold Number One" Lady. She came to check up on him and see him again. I told her who was looking at him, and that I'd get him and meet her outside in one of the runs.

Needless to say, the young kids were none to happy to hear that 'Number One' was still serious about adopting him. They started crying as I took him out of the room. Of course I felt bad, but this woman was so excited. She had this beautiful Polish accent. She and her husband have a home with I think she said 3 acres and horses. Lucky has been around farm animals before and that's why she was interested in him. He would have room to run.

The kids, followed us outside crying (I wanted to tell them to go back to their parents, but felt I couldn't), and one even stuck her tongue out at this lady when she turned away from them. They finally left and went back to their parents.

I think I spoke of Barkley before. Barkley is a 7 year Brindle Rotty mix. A Sweet older boy. Sad being in the Shelter though. He lets you know when he has to go outside... he is very house broken and does not want to go in his kennel. He will kick his metal food bowl around the kennel when he needs to go outside.

Yesterday two young Community Service School kids (program through schools in our area) took him outside and played football with him. He had such a great time. It was nice to see him prance around and play tug with this squeaky football with these boys. You could tell he was happy by the way he moved and barked at the boys when they asked him if he wanted the ball.

There are many other nice dogs in the Shelter right now, but I'm short on time...

I'm still looking for a kitty friend for Lucy...

Cruella is a "Red Cross" dog at the Shelter. I just had to say something about this cool dog. "Red Cross" dogs are dogs that are being boarded at the Shelter while their families are being helped by the Red Cross for whatever reason. They are not up for adoption, but they are walked and played with by staff and volunteers.

Cruella is an all Black Bulldog mix. I think the mix is Pug because she is smaller than a regular Bulldog and has a bit of Pug in her face. She is a little older and takes things in stride... She wears a spiked/studded collar and red painted toenails. I died laughing when I first saw this. She is so cool looking. She has a great sense of humor, and all the Volunteers and technicians just love her.

She doesn't play fetch with a tennis ball, but does chase after the ball and bats it around until she gets tired of it. She made *friends* with Hooch the Rotty mix. I think they are smitten with each other. It's so funny to watch her walk, er I mean strut when Hooch is around. It's very cute. Too bad when Cruella goes home, that Hooch couldn't go too. Oh well...

I thought I'd share... I don't have time to share a full dog blog, but wanted to share Cruella with you all.

Shelby hurt her tail... I don't know how, but I came home from work day before yesterday and she was not her usual Lab self. Running around happy to see me and then running to the back door to go out. Plus her tail was down. The knuckle head probably fell off the bed and knocked it. She has a habit of getting too comfy on my bed and falling off.

Yesterday I get home  from work and it is no better and she is really uncomfortable and not wanting to sit. I call the vet... "What should I do? How long should I wait before bringing her in? Blah Blah Blah." They have an opening in a few minutes bring her in. So we go... I'm in a rush because I'm to be at my Grandmother's memorial in 2 hours and we all know how the Vet's office can be. Well, at least mine.

We decide to just give her anti-inflammatory for a week to see if it helps. Vet wants to wait on an x-ray... If it hasn't gotten better in a week, we'll do x-rays. Poor baby, it's right at the base... possibility that she has broken it. She played it up well last night, and slept right next to me with her head on the pillow.... silly goof.

Some people just piss me off! Two of some of my favorite dogs at the Humane Society were returned earlier this week. Remember Maverick the Beagle I told you about? Well he was back. He barked too much for the woman. Why don't people read up on breeds before getting them?

And then another dog that I really liked named Piper came back as well. He was adopted by a family where English was a second language. Dad did not want a dog, but mom brought the girls in anyway. She promised her husband that the dog would stay in the garage. After showing the women the dog and I knew they were going to adopt him, I went up to the Adoption office to tell them of my fears. Well, Lo and behold he was adopted and he's back after two weeks.

I had someone pull the paper work for me to see what happened. As I thought, Dad did not want the dog in the house AT ALL. Piper got not only relegated out to the garage, but TIED UP in the garage. They fed him mostly table scraps, they didn't buy dog food until the second week when someone from Adoption Services  called to check on everything. The Adoption Service worker explained that feeding the dog people food scraps was unacceptable and that he had to have good dog food and that tying him up in the garage was also unacceptable. He hardly spent any time outside

Well, to make a long story shorter, Piper chewed through his leash and ran away. When they got him back, and they called for advice (they were confused as to why he would WANT to run away), the end of the conversation came when they decided they had to bring him back. Good for Piper to run away!!! Who needs  that shit! These people have a flag by their names and will not be allowed to adopt again from the Oregon Humane Society and their money was not refunded. They took none of the advice that was given to them by the Adoption Services folks.

There are two really beautiful white German Shepherds at the Shelter this week. Buddy and Missy. Very Beautiful. Buddy is 10 months and Missy is four. There was a very nice couple in on Tuesday looking at Missy. They put a hold on her until after her spaying today.

I decided NOT to volunteer 'in the back'. I'm sure you could probably guess why...

While I was at the Vet's yesterday, there was a kitty named 'Red' hanging out there looking for a home. They were trying to find him a home. He came from a "Crack House" which was busted and he ran away to a house 3 doors away. They were customers of the vets and couldn't keep him, but he's so sweet and mellow that he just hangs out on the bench or the counter and visits with everyone and the animals.

Shelby and he sniffed noses and then went their separate ways. I didn't have a chance to actually get close to see if there was any 'bonding' that could be done, so I'm going back after work today. If we bond, then I'll bring Lucy to meet him. I think she'd like a big brother...

Yesterday the Oregon Humane Society, along with Greyhound Pets of America, and several other local groups that take care of homeless and rescued animals had a great time at a local Amusement Park. It was "Bark-toberfest at Oaks Park.  It was the last full day of the summer season that the park would be open and the rides would running, so it was a big day for families to come out and check out all the animals.

The Shelter brought out a bunch of dogs, kitties and some Rabbits. I was there on Adoption Outreach with a wonderful 6 yr old Rotty/Shepherd Mix named Lady. Very nice dog just wanting to find a nice home again. She likes cats, and even went nose to nose with a floppy eared dwarf rabbit named Dude. The rabbit was really cute and with Lady sitting and sniffing the pen the rabbit was in, Dude came hopping over and they sniffed each other. it was so cute!! Lady never barked at the rabbit. The only time she barked was when the Portland Fire's (Local WNBA team) Mascot, "Spot" would be near. Or another Mascot that was a Chipmunk. Dogs hated these huge animals!

A family with three kids came over to check her out in the afternoon. She got along with the kids, but the parents were not too sure, even though they wanted a little older dog. They spent about an hour with her, and then they left. I was really disappointed. After they left we went for a walk, and then I was chatting with some volunteers, who one had 'Buddy' the white Shepherd/Collie Mix. Lady and Buddy liked each other.... it was very cute. I think Buddy felt that Lady was his woman.

Then all of a sudden I see those same three kids that were looking at Lady run towards us. "We've been looking for you and Lady!!!" They all said out of breath. "Mom and dad said we could get her!" I'm looking around for mom and dad... I don't see them. I guess they read my mind.

"We ran really fast up here, they are still back by the concession stands. They'll be here in a few minutes." These kids were so good with Lady, and she was really happy with them. The only one sad was Buddy...

Well, mom and dad came back and it was true. They filled out the adoption paperwork and Lady went home with them.

There were some great Greyhounds there, along with some Great Danes. Jeez, Great Danes are like ponies! They are huge!!

We had a fun time and a lot of animals were adopted!

Some of the dogs I talk about can be seen on the Featured Pets section of the Oregon Humane Society's Web Site. http://www.oregonhumane.org/featured_dogs.asp . Which by the way, I began helping out with, by taking pictures of the new animals on Sundays. Actually every 1st Sunday of each month, usually.

That is quite a job I have found. The dogs are not the easiest to shoot. They are all jumpy and wiggly. The cat's are a little easier, but want to get right in your face, but the rabbits are the easiest. They just sit there. The Guinea Pigs sit and squeak at you as you talk to them, and the rats and mice... well, they are just rats and mice.

Jake, the boy in the picture from the other thread, is a sweet 1 year old Chow mix. He sort of has that, "yah, what about it?" attitude of a Chow, but whatever the mix is in him balances that out and makes him a very loving smart boy. He had been at the Shelter for about two weeks and is always fun to take outside.

He walks really well on a leash and listens very intently to what you say. Can you tell from the picture what a sweet boy he is? He knows how to sit, shake and lay down. He also likes to have his tummy rubbed.

A mom with two girls wanted to meet with him. The family is Iranian, and mom spoke very little English. The oldest daughter who is 16 translated for mom and I. The youngest daughter was around 10 and she was just a hoot. She LOVED Jake, and Jake was really into her.

This would be the family's first dog, and mom had a lot of questions, which was really cool. She wanted to make sure that he was going to be happy with them. The girls were really taken with him, and found it just wonderful that they could tell him to sit and shake and he would do it for a biscuit. The 10 year old asked, "Can I make him lay down?" I told her sure, but what she did was put the biscuit sky high and says, "lay down Jake-y, lay down." Jake just looks up and puts a paw out. I laughed and explained to her and her sister how to ask him to lay down and put it close to the ground. Again mom, was wanting to make sure that he would be happy with them. Wanted to know what to feed him and how long he should go for walks each day. I called him over to her and I and he sat next to her and put his paw her knee. She just that was so cool. She let him lick her and that was it. Love 'Jake-y Style'

There was 'Loves', the 2 year old Black Saluki. http://salukiclub.org/breedinfo/galfaces.htm She is a very beautiful dog. I'm sure she is mixed with something because her hair is not as long if she was purebred.

I took her out for a walk and she pranced. She was a sweet girl, but a little high strung. It was funny though, when we went into one of the outdoor runs and played fetch, she accidentally dropped the tennis ball into the kiddie pool when she realized there was water in it. She dropped the ball and took a drink. Then she realized that she wanted the ball back but it was waaay in the middle of the pool. Basically it was out of her reach, and if she wanted it back she would have to put one or both front feet in the pool. I watched as this dog slowly put one front paw in, pull it back like, 'yuck I'm getting wet!' then put it back in realizing that was the only way to get the ball, put the other front foot in gingerly, pick up the ball and act like she had tape on the
bottoms of her paws (ever do that to a cat?) as she walked over to hand me the ball. it was damn funny!

There was 'Missy', the 2 year old Chocolate Lab (she has a great pic on the website). Really great dog. I was showing her to a young woman who was looking to find her Black Lab 'Jake' a new friend since their Cocker Spaniel just passed and 'Jake' was lonely and depressed. They got along great, and we got a good laugh when 'Missy' heard the ducks across the parking lot start quacking.

It was time for the ducks to go inside for the evening, so when the technician opens up the door to the outside pen, they all follow him in a line and quack quack quack. Well, she is being petted by this woman and hears the quacks. Her ears perk up "whuh", and she runs over to the fence and sees the ducks. She doesn't bark, she just starts wagging her tail and looking back towards us and then towards the ducks. She does this like 3 or 4 times with this look like, "wow ducks! wwwwooowww! Ducks! I want them ducks! now!!! please???!!!" the woman was going to bring her hubby and 'Jake' back today to meet with 'Missy'.

There is a beautiful German Shepherd named 'Crystal'. She just became available yesterday and was very stressed. She should have no problems getting adopted, since she is very well behaved dog and any serious German Shepherd lover will snatch her up quickly.

Oh man, there is this 4 month old Boxer/Pit Bull puppy that just became available last night as I was leaving. His name is 'Tank'. He is the cutest thing I ever saw. He's all white, except for a black patch around one eye and a black patch close to his rump. What a wiggle butt!

There is 'Roscoe'. This guy looks like a 'Roscoe'. This guy is a Shepherd/Rotty mix. Big guy who is grayish in color. He is a cool guy who just loves to go  for walks. He has this very stylish scarf that he is wearing in his picture that makes him look very cool. He is one of my favorites.

Did I mention that 'Bugsy Malone' got adopted? Yup, I'm a happy Camper!

It was a good week for dog adoptions!  Everyone that I mentioned in my last blog  has been adopted, except for Bandit.  I'm sure his time will come.

Bugsy Malone... what a fun dog! Bugsy has been at the Shelter for a week or two. He is a Pharaoh Hound/Husky mix. Quite the mix! He is 2 years old.

Here is a good site for pictures of Pharaoh Hounds  http://www.storyteller2.com/Critters/PPPharoahHound.html

He is golden in color, a little fuller in the body because of the Husky in him, but he has face and ears of a P Hound. His tail is curly like a Husky. He is so sweet! He walks really well on a leash, is curious of other dogs, but wasn't yapping and chasing after any of the dogs, but really wanted to hang with me last night. He was brought in because of 'Divorce'. hhmmpphh...

He had fun with sitting and shaking for me. He really thought he was quite something being able to do these things for me. He likes to play fetch with the tennis ball. He'll make a great pet I think. He's a fun guy who appears to quite intelligent and likes to lean on you.

Eddie... an 11 month old Black Lab. Still a puppy, but great on a leash and a fun walking partner. He's very sweet and smart guy. We went for a walk and then went into an outside kennel and played fetch for about 15 minutes, until he got tired, dropped the ball in the kiddie pool and came over and sat next to me. He is a return to the Shelter, and his first name was Jake. "He didn't get along with the cat". Poor guy.

Another return to the Shelter is Lucky the 5 yr Dachshund. He was adopted during the Shelter Adoption Fair, 7 weeks ago. I distinctly remember him getting adopted and handing him over to the couple to take him home. He was returned because 'she couldn't get him potty trained.'   Lucky is nice boy who love to sit in your lap. He also loves to be carried every where. As soon as you lean over to pick him up, he's already jumping up into your arms. It's pretty damn funny!

There is a little 3 month old Shepherd puppy named Goldie, who is very shy. A young couple asked to see her, so I took her into the "Puppy get acquainted room" but she was so shy she hid under one of the benches. She is being spayed today, and they were thinking of putting her on hold until after that, but they were still thinking about it when I put her back in her kennel.

30 minutes later, another couple asked to see her. She was a little better this time. She walked around the room sniffing things and getting a little closer to the couple. At least she would walk up to them and let them pet her. She wanted nothing to do with the first couple and acted like it hurt her when the woman held her and petted her.

We were sitting chatting about Goldie, and she walked over to me and sat on my foot. I reached down and scratched her tummy. She layed down on her side, and I started rubbing her tummy and she had this look in her face like, "I think I like this... I think I like this." and when I started scratching her chest, a look of relief came over her face and she just collapsed onto the floor. It was so cute. We all laughed. This couple decided to go put a hold on her. The poor girl just needs some love. You can tell she wasn't given very much attention.

King Solomon... Big dog? Little dog? Can you guess? It's a one year old Miniature Schnauzer! What a fun little dog!! He was just made available yesterday and I decided to go in and sit with him in his kennel. He is a hoot.

As I was sitting with him getting licked to death and walked all over, a woman walked up and said, "There you are! I came here especially for you. I saw on the website that you were here... oh shit, you're expensive!" This made me laugh. Did she expect him to be free?  She whined and complained at his adoption fee. Hey, smaller dogs have a larger adoption fee because they are in more of a demand and are very rarely put up for adoption...

"I drove all the way from xxxx, I can't believe you are $$$, that's outrageous, but you are very cute, but shit, you are so expensive... blah blah blah"

I finally asked her if she would like to see him in a room, and she said yes. So we went into a room and he ran around the room, came to us when called, wanted to play and have fun. He's a great dog with really expressive eyes. She still complained and bitched, and finally left. As soon as I put him back in his kennel, a very nice, young English guy wanted to see him. So, back into the room we went. Solomon was on his best behavior, but still acted cute. The guy was looking for a small dog for his son. Solomon was given up because 'there wasn't enough room in the apartment' He's a great little dog.

While I was in the room with the guy looking at Solomon and Solomon was having the time of his life playing with the guy, that first woman walked by and looked in the Window just as Solomon jumped in the guys arms and he got up with a big smile. She knew she messed up and walked away. Dad had no complaints with the adoption fee. Big King Solomon went home last night.

There is a Beagle named Maverick there, but I haven't really had a chance to hang out with him yet. He is two, and seems very sweet. The volunteer that was walking him, said that he is very well behaved and has good manners.

Bandit, the Hound mix was a little stressed yesterday. I took him out to an outside kennel; I don't take him for walks, he is just so strong. Bandit just runs up and down the kennel barking at the dog next to him if there is one in the next outside kennel. Well, Jake was next door and they ran up and down, up and down. It's very hard to get a leash back on Bandit, because he does not know 'come', nor will he stop... he just goes a million miles a minute.

I was able to get a hold of him to get the leash on him when I was ready to take him back in and he wasn't. He got away from me and continued his back and forth barking at Jake. Each time I tried to get him he growled and snarled at me. Not good... I walked away and waited a few seconds and tried again. More snarling and growling. Nope, I left and got a Tech to help me. We were able to calm him down and get him into his kennel. When these sort of things happen, the behaviorists come in and figure out what can be done to help him be less stressed while at the shelter.  Poor boy.

There are some absolutely darling Pit Bull dogs waiting to be adopted. I was able to visit one but not take it out last night. What a sweet boy! He was all wiggle butt and kisses.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... it is so rewarding to be able to go and feel like I'm helping these animals out.  It's better that they are there at the Humane Society amongst "friends" who can take care of them, play with them, and give them the attention they need, then possibly in a neglectful situation or just plain lonely and not being around a "pack".  It makes me feel so much better both physically and mentally.  If I'm stressed, I know that if I go to the shelter and walk some dogs I'll feel better in no time.  Well, I was right yet again!

I spent a couple of hours at the shelter again this afternoon, and had a wonderful time.  There is a darling and sweet little  7 year old Lhasa Apso named 'Lucy' there this evening.  Very shy and quiet little girl.  Poor baby, she is a girl who was brought into the Shelter before with her little girl, and adopted out with her little girl.  But, because she was aggressive towards her little girl, they returned her.

She's so shy, and just doesn't know what to do.  She would wag her tail when I walked by, and I finally unlocked her door and began moving towards her, but she just coward.  I talked to her for a few minutes and was able to 'talk her into' going outside.  I took her outside and some ladies followed us out to one of the outside kennels.  We chatted while she sniffed around and pee'd.  Poor baby...

While I was outside with 'Lucy', a couple was out with 'Kramer'.  He was on his best behavior and I think won them over!  Since I've spent so much time with him, I was able to give them some info on him.  He's a great dog.  He had a good time with them and didn't let me down when I told the couple, "Oh yah, he loves the water!  Last time we were out and there was a pool, like the one there is over there..." I was about to say that he would just jump in and splash around...  Well, he did.  He was attacking the water and doing that 'digging at the water' thing that dogs do so well.  It was so funny!  We got a good laugh out of it.  They decided to put him on hold so they could bring their dog back tomorrow to do a 'pet meet'.  I'm sure that will go well.

Another dog that has mastered the art of 'Digging at the water', is a dog named 'Jamie'.  A very sweet, but shy until she gets to know you Shepherd/Rotty mix.  Or maybe there is Shar Pei in her... I dunno.  Anyway, a young couple were looking for a 'younger' dog but not a puppy and they wanted to look at her.  They had looked at 'Sheba' (M0re on her later), but couldn't take the chance on 'Sheba' because she can 'Climb Fences'.  So, after they looked at 'Sheba', I went and got 'Jamie' for them.  She had just arrived at the Shelter yesterday and was made available today.  Very shy.  It took a few minutes for her to come to me and let me pet her and put the leash on her.

We went outside and she warmed up the couple very quickly.  She loved to play fetch, and she is able to entertain herself.  Plus she loves the water.  She was laying on her side and acting like she was swimming.  She was soaking wet when I took her in.   The couple put a hold on her until after she was Spayed tomorrow.  They will probably pick her up on Saturday.  Great dog.  She is only 11 months old I think.

Okay, 'Sheba'...  I really like her.  She is a German Shepherd/Rotty mix I believe.  She's about a year old and just a love of a dog.  We went for a walk and she was curious about EVERYTHING.  Plus she walks really well on a leash, sits, shakes and lays down.  The only bad thing, is that she's a fence climber.  I guess her owners that brought her in, only had a 5 foot fence and she could get over it.  But then, they did leave her alone 12 hours a day...    Guess what I'm thinking....??  She shouldn't be there long, I hope.  She's a good girl.

Unfortunately, 'Penelope' the Beagle and 'Bear' the Corgi mix are still there.  Ugh...

Oh my gosh, I saw the cutest thing tonight!  I have never seen a Chihuahua puppy before!!!  A few blogs ago, I posted about 'Ginger' the Sentry Chihuahua...  Well, she and one of her babies, 'Heidi' were just made available for adoption tonight.  I sat with them for about 15 minutes before I left tonight.  Oh my god, how cute!  'Ginger' was still a very good Mommy and made sure she stayed close to 'Heidi' and to me while the little girl played with me.  She is sooo tiny!!!

The Adoption worker from the Shelter who fostered 'Ginger' and 'Heidi' made sure to put in their paperwork that they need to go to homes with other pets.  They would be lonely if the only dogs.  Plus, 'Ginger' is very afraid of men.  What cute girls!!!

Last Saturday the 7th I was part of an Adoption Outreach booth at the Senior Expo, being held at the Oregon Convention Center. There were several volunteers along with Kristen the Volunteer Manager in attendance. 'Stormy' the kitty was present, along with 'Bear' the 4 year old Corgi/Australian Shepherd mix and 'Penelope' the 6 year old Beagle. Friday the day before, 'Kipper' the Cocker Spaniel was adopted from the Expo. I'm so happy to hear that. I hope she has a wonderful rest of her life… She is a 9 year old girl.

'Bear' and 'Penelope' were on their best behavior… well, at least most of the time. 'Bear' did accidentally go pee on the rug in the booth. But the poor dogs were getting tired. Long day of seeing hundreds of different people and getting petted and touched. I'm sure by the end of the day they were  glad to go back to a relatively quieter setting of the Shelter.  But they were very GOOD doggies!  Along with Stormy being a very patient kitty.

Last night was another 'hound night'.  At one time, we had 'Lillabelle', 'Henry' and 'Farley' in the Outside Kennels.  It sounded like a fox hunt!  'Lillabelle' in one and the two boys in the another.  All three running back and forth howling at each other.  You gotta wonder what was being said.

I met Julie, another new volunteer to the Dog Walking program.  We had quite the fun time with many of the dogs, and we got quite the workout!  'Clifford' was still there and was wanting to take us for a walk.  He immediately tried to take the leash and lead us, but he finally calmed down and we three had a good walk and then a good run around one of the outside shelters.

There was 'Buffy', a 1 year old toy Poodle/Cocker Spaniel mix.  What a doll!  She had many visitors the last two days and she was adopted last night by a family that brought there little terrier for a 'Pet Meet'.  That went really well, and off Buffy went home!  Yaayyy!

Oh, there are these two sweet dogs that are together that are just so shy.  'Libby' and 'Sugar'...  what two, sweet lovable girls.  They are both around two years old and very shy.  They need to go home together.  They are Shepherd mixes, and would stay right at my side when we went walking.  Then they just wanted to sit in my lap.  I took some time and went into their kennel with then and sat with them for awhile.  Kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss....

Can I just say that I have to wonder about some people?  One of the Animal Care Technician's came up to me and asked if I wouldn't mind showing 'Henry and 'Farley' to a couple that really wanted to see them. It sounded serious.  Of course I said yes.  Anything to get the dogs shown and hopefully sent to new homes.

It was a young couple.  So, off to one of the outside kennels we go.  Of course the two brothers were howling and running around like the hounds they are. The guy just thought it was hilarious and was calling the dogs dumb names.  The young lady was bored and acted disinterested.  The guy made the comment, "wouldn't the other people get a kick outta these dogs at the apartment complex?"      Oh dear!   Needless to say, the guy just wanted some time with the dogs.  I don't know why he picked these dogs, because they paid NO attention to him.  Later, the Animal Care Technician found me and asked how it went.       That's how it went....  people can be so frustrating!

'Bear' and 'Penelope' are still at the shelter.  I'm hoping that Saturday and Sunday at the PetSmart Outreach that I am participating in, they will get adopted.  Both are going.  I will be taking 'Penelope;, and if she doesn't get adopted Saturday, she'll spend the night with me.  This could be very interesting! Three dogs and a cat in one house for the night....

I have the worst heartburn/indigestion this morning... ugh! I woke up at 2 am with it. I think I ate dinner too late. And I have no Tums or anything at home. bleh...

I've become a 'Dog Walking Program Volunteer Mentor', at the Humane Society. When new volunteers sign up, their first day with the animals is with an 'experienced' volunteer. Monday and Tuesday evenings I'm showing volunteers 'the ropes', so yesterday, a gal named Jenna and I hung out. There seems to be a run on Hounds at the shelter recently.  There are 6 there now. These are the big lanky hounds that are REALLY loud.

We took out 'Bandit', who was some sort of Coon Hound. He's a very sweet boy, but I think he was probably left outside and didn't get much socialization with people. He really wanted nothing to do with us.  He ran around the outside kennel howling at the other dogs and sniffing. He had had no obedience training  and is not house broken. He may be staying awhile, while the socialization skills get worked on. Poor guy... he's very beautiful.

Another Hound is 'Lillabelle'. She's typical hound. Love to go out and just bark and howl.  Right now she is very shy of people but sweet. She's another that is getting some 'people skills'.

Jenna and I took out 'Henry' and 'Farley' next. They are Hound brothers. 'Henry' had been fixed the day earlier so he was a little 'tender' and walking just a bit gingerly. He's a short stalky guy with bowed front legs. He is very into people. His brother 'Farley' was more interested in running up and down the outside kennel howling at the dog that was in the next pen. 'Henry' would go over and join his brother occasionally in the noise making and then he would come back over to us and gingerly sit so he could get some luvin. What a good boy. I do hope though, that they go home together.

We then took 'Kramer' for a walk. What a goof ball! He has some Shepherd in him, and he coloring and look of St. Bernard, just smaller. What a good natured dog! We went for a walk, and he was begging for treats the whole time. He knows how to sit and shake. We took him into one the outside kennels that had a kiddie pool that had water in it (remember it's been hot, and Christine stole our rain yesterday!). He ran over to the pool and immediately plopped right in it and laid on his side.

The next guy we took for a walk was named 'Bear' yet again. He was a Corgi mix with Brindle coloring. He was sweat and loved giving kisses. He would be great for a Senior Citizen.

We then found 'Risky' the Pom... I honestly have never been around Pomeranians before. What a silly little boy! He is six and his owner had to move into an apartment. The apartment couldn't take an 8 lb dog? Poor little guy, he is so sweet, and just bounces right into your lap.

Then the next sweetheart we found was a 9 year old Cocker Spaniel. How could you give up your 9 year old dog? Her name is 'Kipper'. She was a big chunk. I bet she weighed 35 lbs. She was very quiet and composed. We took her out and sat with her for a long time. You could tell she was sad. Even if I had to move somewhere, I would make sure I could take my 9 year old dog. That would be like me abandoning Ajax.

Couldn't do it. I know some people have to, but there would be no way in hell I could give him up.

There a just so many good dogs at the shelter right now. There is a 6 year old Beagle named Penelope. She was being very stubborn yesterday. Two of the young Community Service (through schools) volunteers (two young gals around the age of 12) took her out for a walk and I watched as she did the typical, 'I'm tired of walking' Beagle routine. She just stopped and sat down. She wouldn't budge. You can only pull on a dogs leash so much. I finally had to go pick her up and take her to her kennel. Been there, done that with Ajax... brat dogs.
