Aaron Johanson and Van Lee's Craftsman style hutch

My clients Aaron Johanson and Van Lee needed more storage space in their dining room and ask me to build them a hutch in a space occupied by a old chimney. The old brick chimney had been converted to a 2" clearance metal flue that would allow a normal looking hutch except the first drawer on the bottom which starts a little farther up than normal. The hutch would need to match existing woodwork and cover the footprint of the old chimney.
Aaron wanted to use the hutch to show slides for his photography business. This was accomplished by using a pull down screen in the top cabinet that show a projection from a cabinet in the next room. The top doors swing out then push back into the cabinet allow viewing from all over the room.
Van and Aaron also needed extra space to hold food on when entertaining. I used a pullout chopping board arrangement for this feature.
The cabinet was made in spring of 2000 out of vertical grain fir and has a shellac finish.
