The Basement

basement

The big distraction this week was water in my basement because of the heavy rains. Of course it was in the only area I have not reorganized at all yet. I went down one morning to find water pooled all across the floor on this side of the basement. Then I noticed the seepage along the wall. My best guess is that the perforated drain line I put in six years ago was not connected to the rainwater outlet as I requested, since this looks the same as the first year I was here before I put it in.

**That turned out not to be the case. it was just a really wet winter and without any ground cover too much water was going through the soil too quickly. Hopefully reestablishing the garden will solve this.

The problem is caused by the fact that my side yard is inches lower than my neighbor's driveway so the gutter for their roof drains into my yard and it's just too much water for such a small space. The up side is that, once it stops raining, a leaky basement drains and dries up very quickly.

Anyway, it forced me to finally reorganize and clean this corner of the basement. Mostly it involved moving everything out, sweeping, setting up some dividers, and sliding in various items according to size. Eventually, the things too big for this space will go into the garage, when I can clear out the fence and decking materials.
