OryCon Sold Out!

The last at-the-door membership for OryCon 20 was sold at 3:50 p.m. on Friday, November 13, 1998. The winner of the poll is Autumn Roberts (#231). (She narrowly beat out Tooth Fairy and OryCon 20 office saint Chris Carpenter's guess of 4:00 p.m.) She wins a complete set of Armageddon trading cards and immortal fame in the daily 'zine.

Opening Ceremonies

There were gasps of awe mingled with shrieks of disbelief as the Great Copperdine (David Levine, in Top Hat) & his glamourous assistant Patty Wells magically materialized the Guests of Honour from thin air by means of stupendously cheap special effects (a cardboard box.) To mark the woeful absence of GoH Lionel Fanthorpe, Dave Langford could not be prevented from telling yet again the OryCon 11 lightbulb joke about the master of padding:

"How many Fanthorpe pseudonyms does it take to change a lightbulb, to replace it, to reinstate it, to substitute for it, to swap, exchange, renew, supersede or supplant it, to provide a proxy, to put another in its stead ... ?"

(Exit Dave Langford, pursued by a thesaurus.)

Want to Be Part of Ms. Bujold's Interview?

There's still time to get into the action. Drop your questions for GoH Lois McMaster Bujold (about her work, her characters, themes, etc.) into the Question Boxes at Registration and the Office by 5 p.m. Saturday. Mark Bourne will select a few for Saturday night.

Treasure Hunt

As of 10 a.m. Saturday, the Treasure Hunt object has not been found. These are the clues revealed on Friday.

4 p.m. (The Free Verse Clue):

Earth and Air
Wood and Metal
Only Fire do I see not

6 p.m. (The Haiku Clue):

These I hide beside:
A trio, one long, two high,
And all long, near I.

8 p.m. (The Not-at-Opening-Ceremonies Clue):

You seek, you seek, but I'm not there
Past the bridge and past the square
Over the bridge and over the round
That, that is where I'll be found

10 p.m. (The clue with no cutesy name):

Every fan at the con I do see;
You come to the con and all see me.
I point in plain view
At a special clue
But can you spot what I see?

12 midnight (The Tolkien Clue):

One ring to fool them all,
   One ring to blind them,
One ring to lure them all,
And in the darkness unwind them.
On the isle of Hayden where the Hotels lie.

2 a.m. (The Insomniacs' Clue):

Up and down, east and west,
Until you find me you will not rest;
Look for me now and look for me then --
If these clues aren't enough...
   ...ya gotta wait 'til ten!

Half of the Art Show staff was at the front playing Fluxx this year instead of Social Class.
