Left Coast Crime 12

PROGRESS REPORT THREE

RANDOM NOTES

from Debbie Cross, LCC 12 Co-Chair

The Left Coast Crime Committee is now in full gear getting ready for the convention. We are really excited about how things are shaping up. Not only do we have great Guests of Honor, but many other talented and interesting authors will on hand to share in the fun. We are especially looking forward seeing those that have agreed to entertain us Friday evening.

Memberships keep rolling in and we are projecting that we may exceed our original estimate of 500 attendees. This includes folks from all over the US, Canada, and as far away as Australia and the United Kingdom. We hope not only to meet your expectations for interesting and informative programming, but also that you will remember Left Coast Crime 12 as a fun convention.

We have worked to keep the registrations rates well below most recent mystery conventions. One of the ways we have been able to do this is by not paying outrageous hotel prices to provide mediocre hotel meals (therefore you should plan accordingly). Although no meals will be provided, we will be hosting two receptions, one featuring desserts and another featuring hors d'oeuvres in addition to our well-stocked hospitality suite with extensive open hours. Plan not only for days full of programming, but for evenings full of entertainment and socializing!

HOTEL

Our room block expires on February 28, 2002. After that date, the remaining rooms are released to the general public. If you wait until then, you may encounter a full hotel, or might not get the convention rate. So it's important to make your room reservation soon! (They're going fast.) The room rate will be a flat $99 a night (no energy surcharge, or corkage charges) for up to four people in the room, not including the room tax. (Currently 11½%, but there's no general sales tax in Oregon.) There's also a $10 a night additional charge if you request a river view room.

There occasionally have been problems when people have tried to make room reservations through the national reservation office. That seems to have slacked off now, but the best way you can make sure to get someone who has the proper convention room information is to call or fax the hotel directly, and ask for "In-House Reservations". Then you should have no problem. (If you do, contact us right away and we'll work to get it fixed.)

By the way, the tentative sale of our hotel fell through, so we're still part of the Doubletree/Hilton family and you'll still get those Hilton Honors points for your stay here for LCC 12.

HOW TO GET TO THE HOTEL

BY CAR: The Doubletree Hotel Portland Columbia River is nestled next to the Columbia River, just as you cross into Oregon from Washington on Interstate 5. (See map.) Traveling either northbound or southbound, take exit #308 (signs will read "Jantzen Beach Center" and "Hayden Island"). (This exit is about 7 miles from downtown Portland.) Our hotel is the one with the red trim, to the west of the freeway (on the shopping center side). If you're traveling south, it's the hotel to your right just as you enter Oregon; if you're heading north, bear left under the freeway, and it will be to your right. There's acres of free parking available at the hotel and at the nearby shopping center.

BY AIR: Portland International Airport is about 6 miles from the hotel, and about 8 miles from downtown Portland. There is a free shuttle from the airport running every 30 minutes from 7 AM to 11 PM (it serves both the Columbia River and Jantzen Beach Doubletree hotels, as well as the Red Lion Inn at the Quay--be careful not to accidentally take the shuttle serving the Lloyd Center and Downtown Doubletrees). A taxi costs about $24.
If you are renting a car, the easiest way to drive to the hotel actually entails heading into another state (although it is on freeways all the way). Follow the signs from the airport to Interstate 205. Head north on I-205, crossing the Columbia River into Washington, and head west on State Route 14 (about 5 miles) to Interstate 5. Take I-5 south across the Columbia River, and take the first exit after the bridge. You'll be within a block of the hotel.

Another alternative available is the airport light rail system. For only $1.55, it will take you directly from the airport terminal to downtown Portland. (Taxi fare from the airport to downtown Portland is about $26.) Unfortunately, then you're still a taxi or bus ride away from Jantzen Beach (they're just starting work on the north Portland line), but there's no extra cost to transfer from the light rail system to a bus.

BY BUS/RAIL: Union Station, the Portland Amtrak terminal, is right next to the Greyhound station. From either, walk a couple of blocks south (through the construction) to Everett Street, and catch a #5 Jantzen Beach or Vancouver Tri-Met bus. The fare is $1.20, and there's a bus stop in front of the hotel. (A taxi costs about $20.)

Note: You can also take the train to Vancouver, since that station is very close to the Jantzen Beach area. But if you're heading northbound, that'll mean about an hour delay while the train stops first in Portland.

PROGRAMMING

We're tremendously enthusiastic about the response we've received about the Left Coast Program and are sorting through it to put together as interesting a program as possible. But please note: we believe there are a few program participants who have not received a questionnaire as we have had bounces on emails and from the post. If you are one of these people, we do have a program questionnaire posted on the Left Coast Crime Website at http://www.spiritone.com/~jlorentz/leftcoast/ --complete it and send it on in to us. We want to make sure we utilize all the talent we'll have at the convention!

There are some great ideas that we hope to carry out at the convention. Just to whet your appetites, one of the things we're most excited about is our Guest of Honor presentations. At this point, Dennis McMillan and Don Herron are planning to interview each other on Friday afternoon. Laurie King and Steven Saylor are working along similar lines, but with a twist. Their lead characters will be interviewing each other on Saturday afternoon, offering a step back in time that can't be topped.

Programming will include panel discussions and signings, readings, workshops, and an item that has proven popular elsewhere--the 15 minutes of fame, where writers share what interests them most. For the most part, autographing sessions will directly follow panels for those participants.

Here's the folks we have for the program as of January 7th:

AUTOGRAPH SESSIONS

Most program participants will be doing book signing sessions during the convention. This is a wonderful opportunity for fans to meet the authors. However, we would like to address the question of autographing etiquette.

When ever possible, please try to have your books signed during the specified periods and let the authors enjoy their convention. Please be polite when asking for an autograph and do not bother authors when they are otherwise engaged. Restaurants, bars, and rest rooms should be considered off limits.

If you have an exceptionally large number of books to get signed, please wait until others with just a few books have had a chance to get theirs signed. If you abuse the system, you may be asked to step to the side until the end of the session.

The entertainment features the Charles Crosman Jazz Band, with comedy routines by April Henry and Barbara Seranella, and songs performed by Judy Jance, Deni Dietz, Glenn Meganck, and others. With special guests: The Knott Sisters. The MC is Jerry Ford.

And don't forget the Hawaiian Shirt Contest!

Saturday: The Lefty Award Ceremony

Left Coast Crime 12 will present the Lefty Award for the most humorous mystery novel published in 2001. This year's finalists are:

Any registered (attending or subscribing) member of Left Coast Crime 12 may vote for one of these titles. You may submit your vote in writing to:

Left Coast Crime 12
PO Box 18033
Portland OR 97218-0033

You may also submit you vote by email to wallsthom@cs.com. (Write "Lefty Ballot" in the subject line.) Your name should be included with the vote, and it must be received by March 1.

The following books also received nominations:

The Spotted Owl Award, to presented in the same ceremony, is administered by the Friends of Mystery. This has since been changed to a ceremony on Thursday night.

The Dilys Award, also to be presented at the same ceremony, is sponsored by the Independent Mystery Booksellers.

Saturday: Charity Auction

Portland's Harriet Vane Chapter of Sisters in Crime, with the assistance of the national Sisters in Crime organization, is organizing the Saturday night charity auction to benefit Oregon Literacy, Inc. The mission of this Portland-based nonprofit is to increase the capacity and effectiveness of literacy services through partnerships with community-based programs across the state. Toward that end they provide a variety of activities and services to support local adult literacy efforts, including volunteer recruit-ment and training support as well as books and instructional materials. For adults who want to learn to read, they offer a referral service and book scholarships.

The auction will take place Saturday evening in conjunction with the reception and the presentation of the Lefties and Spotted Owl awards. If you have an auction item to contribute (or even a good idea), please contact Kathryn Scotten at kathryn@withyscott.com. Any item or service that would be of interest to mystery folks would be welcome.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED

The committee has volunteered hundreds of hours to present this convention and we could use your help for a few hours during the convention. If you volunteer, we will have a great time. I don't know why, it's a mystery!

Now that you have finished your groan and I have your attention, please think about what you can do to join in. As you can see in the many department reports there are many activities planned. I would like to match your preferences or skills to help with these events.

The auction needs five people to help with item checkouts beginning about 9:30pm. There will be a fifteen-minute "training" sometime in the afternoon. During the auction, duties are to collect each bidder's purchases in neat piles for their easy retrieval, to use a custom computer program to provide bidders with receipts, and to take payments and mark the receipts.

We would also like to recruit people for shifts to staff a table during the con to promote the auction and sell raffle tickets. Some roving volunteers might want to just sell raffle tickets as they move about the con to help promote the event. The prize will be given at the auction.

Those specifics aside, various hospitality or tech help may be needed and there is always something at the last minute. You can help. Please drop me an email anytime before the convention at page@prodigy.net. During the con, please check at the office where I will have sign up sheets available.

A table will provided, probably in the lobby area of the hotel, for authors to sell their own books. There will be a sign-up sheet for one hour blocks of time. Just find the table when you arrive and sign up for your time slot. If there are still blocks of time left by the end of the day Friday, you can choose to sign up for a second slot.
