Left Coast Crime 12 Hotel

There's both bad and good news about hotel rooms at Left Coast Crime 12.

What's the bad news?

The Doubletree Columbia River hotel is completely sold out. We'd reserved more rooms that we ever expected to need--and the demand has outstripped that number and more. The hotel doesn't have a single room available.

OK, what's the good news?

We've been able to reserve some rooms at a nearby hotel, the Oxford Suites. (It's a couple of blocks away, and is often used as overflow for the science fiction conventions we've held at the Doubletree.)

The rate is a flat $89 for two people, regardless of room type (and they will honor the rate for days before or after the convention). All rooms have refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers and hair dryers, as well as a 25" TV and video player. The cost includes a full breakfast buffet (serving eggs and hashbrowns) and an evening social with beer, wine and snacks. The amenities include an indoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna as well as a convenience store that sells food that can be microwaved in the room. They have an airport shuttle and are willing to help shuttle people to the DoubleTree.

The block at the Oxford Suites expires very soon! Call to make your reservation today.

The Doubletree Columbia River

There is a chance that rooms might become available again at the Doubletree as we get closer to the convention and people find they can't make it to the convention. In case they do, here's the information:

The room rate will be a flat $99 a night (no energy surcharge, or corkage charges) for up to four people in the room, not including the room tax. (Currently 11.5%, but there's no general sales tax in Oregon.). There's also a $10 a night additional charge if you request a river view room. (No charge if you get one by chance.)

(By the way, the sale of the hotel to WestCoast Hospitality was canceled, so we'll still be at a "Doubletree", part of the Hilton family of hotels. You can still get those HiltonHonors points!)

HOW TO GET TO THE HOTEL

BY CAR: The Doubletree Hotel Portland Columbia River is nestled next to the Columbia River, just as you cross into Oregon from Washington on Interstate 5. (map)
Traveling either northbound or southbound, take exit #308 (signs will read "Jantzen Beach Center" and "Hayden Island"). (This exit is about 7 miles from downtown Portland.) Our hotel is the one with the red trim, to the west of the freeway (on the shopping center side). If you're traveling south, it's the hotel to your right just as you enter Oregon; if you're heading north, bear left under the freeway, and it will be to your right. There are acres of free parking available at the hotel and at the nearby shopping center.

BY AIR: Portland International Airport is about 6 miles from the hotel, and about 8 miles from downtown Portland. There is a free shuttle from the airport running every 30 minutes from 7 AM to 11 PM (it serves both the Columbia River and Jantzen Beach Doubletree hotels, as well as the Red Lion Inn at the Quay--be careful not to accidentally take the separate shuttle that serves the "Lloyd Center" and "Downtown" Doubletrees). A taxi costs about $24.

If you are renting a car, the easiest way to drive to the hotel actually entails heading into another state (briefly-- it's on freeways all the way). Follow the signs from the airport to Interstate 205. Head north on I-205, crossing the Columbia River into Washington, and head west on State Route 14 (about 5 miles) to Interstate 5. Take I-5 south across the Columbia River, and take the first exit after the bridge. You'll be within a block of the hotel.

Another alternative available is the airport light rail system. For only $1.55, it will take you directly from the airport terminal to downtown Portland. (Taxi fare from the airport to downtown Portland is about $26.) Unfortunately, then you're still a taxi or bus ride away from Jantzen Beach (they’re just starting work on the north Portland line), but there's no extra cost to transfer from the light rail system to a bus.

BY BUS/RAIL: Union Station, the Portland Amtrak terminal, is right next to the Greyhound station. From either, walk a couple of blocks south (through the construction) to Everett St., and catch a #5 Jantzen Beach or Vancouver Tri-Met bus. The fare is $1.20, and there's a bus stop in front of the hotel. (A taxi costs about $20.)

(You can also take the train to Vancouver, since that station is very close to the Jantzen Beach area. But if you're heading northbound, that'll mean about an hour delay while the train stops first in Portland.)
