Evening Events

Special Note: One thing that's not on the schedule at Left Crime this year is a banquet. We're working hard to give our attendees the best value for their money, so we've kept the membership prices low rather than including the cost of an expensive, but forgettable, hotel banquet meal.

Make sure your plans include being at the convention during the evenings. Friday night will feature a reception from 8PM to 10 PM that will include desserts, live entertainment and the Dennis McMillan “Memorial” Hawaiian Shirt Contest.

Saturday evening will include the presentation of the Lefty Award, as well as our Charity Auction to benefit the Oregon Literacy Project. Our hospitality suite will be open and well-stocked every evening to provide a place to socialize and enjoy the company of like-minded people.

Friday: Music To Die For!

After dinner, on Friday night at Left Coast Crime, March 22, 2002, join us in the beautiful Riverview Room for some fabulous desserts and drinks while enjoying some comedy and music to die for.

The entertainment features the Charles Crosman Jazz Band, with comedy routines by April Henry and Barbara Seranella, and songs performed by Judy Jance, Deni Dietz, Glenn Meganck, and others. With special guests: The Knott Sisters. The MC is Jerry Ford.

The Dennis McMillan Hawaiian Shirt Contest

To honor our Publisher Guest of Honor Dennis McMillan’s colorful career in Publishing and Fashion, Left Coast Crime 12 is staging a Hawaiian Shirt Contest. Many prizes will be awarded. The rules are simple: Wear a Hawaiian shirt (polo shirts and muu-muus don’t count) on Friday, March 22, and you are automatically entered in the Contest.

LCC’s roving panel of judges will espy your entry and take notes. The shirts will be judged in various categories that include “Traditional”, “Mystery Theme”, “Portland-inspired” and “Hangover Cure”. (Plus any new and outstanding categories that our esteemed tribe of Judges can come up with.)

Prizes will be awarded Friday at the Reception. You need not be present to win but it helps!

(If you're looking for a great Hawaiian shirt to wear Friday night, try here.)

Saturday: Award Presentation and Charity Auction

Saturday evening's activities will start with the presentation of the Lefty Award for the most humorous mystery novel published in 2001.

The activities continue with the charity auction, sponsored by Portland’s Harriet Vane Chapter of Sisters in Crime, with the assistance of the national Sisters in Crime organization, to benefit Oregon Literacy, Inc. The mission of this Portland-based nonprofit is to increase the capacity and effectiveness of literacy services through partnerships with community-based programs across the state. Toward that end they provide a variety of activities and services to support local adult literacy efforts, including volunteer recruitment and training support as well as books and instructional materials. For adults who want to learn to read, they offer a referral service and book scholarships.

Sisters in Crime members and Oregon Literacy volunteers are working together to solicit items for the auction. If you have an auction item to contribute (or even a good idea) please contact Kathryn Scotten (kathryn@withyscott.com). Any item or service that would be of interest to mystery folks would be welcome.
