Personalized Gate - Laurelhurst Neighborhood Portland, Oregon

Residential Railing - Laurelhurst Neighborhood Portland, Oregon

Gate sign for the manor of textured steel, hammered copper, and copper rivets.
Currently resides in SW Portland

This is the final sketch made for a client's garden gate.
This time the scroll work was to resemble fiddle head ferns.

We tried to stay as close as possible to the drawing.

This design casts some wonderful shadows making this gate a pleasure to view throughout the year.

For the latch we designed a simple scroll spring to resemble the interior scrolls.
We also added a thumb latch to help in opening from the front.

The client at this home wanted a double door garden gate with a sweeping arbor over the top.
The gate would latch in the middle but have a drop bolt so that one side could open and one stay shut.
The client also asked that we make the ornamentation a bit forbidding to deter intruders.

The drop bolt was made to resemble a leaf at the handle and the branch as the bolt.

To add to the forbidding element we placed a snake to help ward off evil intentions.

This is the lay-out section of a panal for a deck railing.
The client wanted a Norwegian design and we chose "Ygdrisil" the tree of life as the central focus.
The pickets were made of stout 5/8 solid square with reverse twists.
The tops were then split and hot formed into ram's head scrolls.

Hot twisting each picket because you can't buy them like this from a catalog.

The reverse twist captures the light in a most interesting way.

On this job we were asked to design the replacement for the wood rail that came with the condo.
The client wanted straight strong line with a hint of organic flowing style.
We looked at cable designed horizontal style, but thought, "Where's the fun in that?"

Construction of Garden Gate

Finished Garden Gate - Vancouver, Washington

A year after we finished the sliding gate at this client's house, she proposed that we design a replacement for this wood rail surrounding the deck.
We based our design on the gate leaf and vine scrolls but centered these within each panel. The result was:

The gate was re-attached and a cap rail of hardwood was centered on the steel rail by our good friend Louis Todd of Louis Todd Construction.

This is a job we did for the Portland Rhododendron Society at SE Portland's Crystal Springs Park.
We were asked by the stone worker who laid the steps to add this rail.
It is based on an existing rail in the park that was made in the 1940's.
We matched the original with hammer textured edges, hand rivets for joinery and split supports.
