The Tartan Tent, Glasgow
12th July '98
by Linda Thackray

The boys have come home, first show for months, single high in the charts, football fever all around and even a little bit of sun... perfect mix for a great gig and we were not disappointed.

A traditional Scottish band, Martyn Bennett, to open-up followed by the super "Supernaturals" (supported Dels Christmas '96) Lively and a few good tunes to warm the crowd up. Ending with "Smile"...very apt.

Now we're ready for the Dels and "Wot A Blinding Set", included two new songs, the audience already familiar with the chorus can't be bad. A fantastic performance of "Don't Come Home Too Soon" with special guest Kevin McDermott and total audience participation in football chant mode, raising the roof close to Barrowlands level.

Audience and band clearly had a lot of fun. After 2 encores the end still came as a shcok - everyone wanted more but alas not until the next gig. Still this was one not to be missed, now where's that bar, I've sung meself hoarse!

"Cry To Be Found"
byAnna Barwick

Cry To Be Found

It has been tipped to be their greatest hit to date - Cry To Be Found is the second new track on the forthcoming Singles 89:98 album, due to be released as a single on 17th August.

Simon Mayo played it exclusively on his Radio 1 show on 9th July, no doubt having been given the privilege as a result of being the person who got the Dels their tickets for the World Cup game between Scotland and Morocco, after they had been let down badly by the SFA for the Scotland-Brazil game.

Simon Mayo called Cry To Be Found "very good" and in the same sentence suggested that he should have made listeners guess the band.

I am not sure, on reflection, whether that was a compliment, but I can only agree with Mr. Mayo - this does not sound like the Del Amitri I know, instead the new single is a mixture of Lionel Richie and Wet Wet Wet, and after listening to it many times I am still not even beginning to like it, so it will no doubt be a huge hit!

The strength of Del Amitri's songs have, for me at least, always been in the sharpness of JC's lyrics. If I ever should want slush (God forbid!), I would go out and buy CD's by Take That.

Maybe it is the band's recent association with Boyzone which has prompted this change of direction, but judging by the other new song aired at Glasgow Green in June (Everybody Knows It's You), thankfully this may be just a one-off bid for a chart success, which I can only hope it achieves.

If JC really did feel the need to change direction in order to achieve a hit (which I don't personally thinks was necessary!!) it is a pity he didn't go in the direction of The Verve, which would at least made it a listenable record...

"Don't Come Home Too Soon"
byJanet Barmann

Since the 9th of June I have finally got the World Cup single of the Dels.

In Germany I had never heard this song on the radio, so I had a very good idea.

I have a favourite radio station called "Fritz" and there is a music-voting which takes place everyday. They do play two actual songs and you can call in for your favourite song. A song can win 10 times.

So I sent a fax to "Fritz". I let them know about the new Dels World Cup song, and that I would enjoy it if they played it on the 10th June (the first day of the World Cup) in the music -voting against a Brazilian football song. And they did!!

Don't Come Home Too Soon #1 Of course I called many times for Del Amtiri. And they won with 82%. They also won for the next 5 days (without my help!).

But now they have spirited Del Amitri away (unfortunately and incomprehensibly).

I think, I had to tell you about this voting, because it was a great success for the Dels and also for me.

Now I am waiting for the Singles 89:98 album. There is no release date for this in Germany so I hope it is coming soon.
