EDITORIAL: (in my humble opinion)
Well, the band was dropped from Universal.
I'm not going to go on about how unexpected, and how shortsighted, and
what were they thinking... it was a money issue. Del Amitri weren't
bringing in the amount of money the corporation needed, so out they go.
Like so much bathwater.
It's not the first time, and it's not the last time a decent band will find
itself without a label. But then, they've always had a hard time
labeling Del Amitri. What are they? Pop? Rock? FOLK
ROCK?? Nobody seems to know, including the band themselves. They're
just Del Amitri, let the rest of the world catagorize them if they need to.
It's been 5 years or so since the demise of A&M. That put Del Amitri on
the block. The chopping block of corporate shmoes that didn't have a clue
who or what Del Amitri was. To their credit, they kept the band around for
5 years. A greatest hits package and a b-sides package we wouldn't
otherwise have on our own shelves. And then there's the Can You Do Me
Good? album. Despite the gasps of horror from those purists who
couldn't believe there was sampling being used on a Dels record; Can You Do
Me Good? is a damn fine album.
But, before you go writing Del Amitri off as has-beens in the bargain bin at
your local record outlet... bear in mind that these are the same guys who wrote
all those songs you loved, and still love. There's more coming, you just
have to be willing to wait. Don't be like the idgits at Universal, et al,
who wrote them off to save a couple corporate bucks (that they'll write off
anyway). Stand by your band; by our band. They'll be back, in
tremendous splendor.
