A Family-Style Epic on the TransAmerica Bike Trail

7/20/07 - Sonora, KY to Harrodsburg, KY - 103.9mi / 6:31 / 15.9mph [2510 vert] - Total So Far: 3110.9mi

Passed through some beautiful country today, including areas with quintessential Kentucky horse farm homes (including some HUGE old estates) and Lincoln references everywhere. There was Lincoln's birthplace, Lincoln's boyhood home, Lincoln's parent's cabin, Lincoln's best friend's home. All over the place, Lincoln, Lincoln, Lincoln.

EVERY road in Kentucky has rumble strips - no matter how insignificant the road.

One of the coolest images I've ever seen - a bunch of restored and souped-up Ford Mavericks

Just awesome . . .

Harrodsburg was meant to be our final stopping point for the night - there was an awesome park there (with a pool and a water slide - of course we had to try those out!) but it became immediately obvious that while camping was allowed, this place was not set up for any sort of camping . . . especially not on a Friday evening when private pool parties, baseball games, and volleyball tournaments were just beginning to get spooled up.

On-route camping options are getting harder and harder to find. Boy did we get spoiled in Kansas.

We did some additional research and found that Danville, a town about 8 miles south, did have a real campground - so we headed on down to the "Pioneer Playhouse and Campground." Turns out the Pioneer Playhouse part is a bonafide dinner theater, with some heavy hitter history. The set that is there (was moved to this location from further West) was used in 1956 in the production of "Raintree County" with Elizabeth Taylor. AND such notables as Lee Major, Billy Bob Thornton, and a very skinny 15-year-old John Travolta got an early start there. Even that dude that came up with the whole "Hey Vern!" schtick appeared there back in the 70's.
