Last day in Illinois and the terrain is beginning to look very much like Kentucky.
| A herd of mutants seen along the route today. That's some serious head-gear! They all have their eyes closed because they're concentrating so hard on staying upright. |
|
We're camped now right on the Ohio River in a really great spot - Cave-In Rock State Park.
|
The park has a cave that is obvious from the river and is a major landmark in these parts. In the 1800's the cave was a hide-out for
pirates, thieves, and murderers. They'd wait for a river craft to stop and unload its occupants for a little explore, kill
them all, then sell the loot.
Now there's nothing inside to suggest such a nefarious past. We checked the whole cave out - would have been cool to have seen a skull, or an old bottle of rum, or something. . . . There were some cool inscriptions in the rock from the 1800's, though (made before the author got konked on the head?). |

Amy says: "these mosquitoes are murderous!!" so we're all caked with bug spray and have been doing a lot of hiding inside the camper. The overnight is setting up to be one of the hottest so far, though (too bad we're still not tucked in at the Holiday Inn). Right now the temp is 82 degrees - the humidity 82%. I took a shower earlier which turns out was a waste of time.
"Man it's hot" seems to be the phrase of the evening.
Not much else remarkable about today, except I'm now armed with dog repellant pepper-spray for the famed dogs of Kentucky - especially Eastern Kentucky. Had a few more run-in's today with Illinois dogs - most just wanted to run along and protect their yards, but one meant business. That guy got a squirt of 1/2 strength Gatorade between the eyes. I woulda' rather have held on to it to drink instead of wasting it on that fellow. Last time I checked dog repellant doesnt' have any electrolytes so they can have all of that stuff they want.
