Destination: Across The Nation

A Family-Style Epic on the TransAmerica Bike Trail

7/9/07 - Nickerson, KS to Cassoday, KS - 90.8mi / 5:30 / 16.5mph [545 vert] - Total So Far: 2154.2mi

20 minute train delay in Newton, Kansas so I elected to give the Main Street sidewalk a ride (in the shade)

Good thing I have my special FBI Secret Decoder earpieces inserted.

Today was the first day where I broke a real honest-to-goodness sweat. A really good high humidity, making more sweat than evaporates off sort of sweat. It's good to be back in the humidity again. I've always liked the kind of air you could feel and sink your teeth into . . . Dunno why. Born & raised in it and all I guess.

"Hey! I've got an idea . . . let's all go down to the PLEASANT CENTER!"

Still didn't mean that the amount of fluids consumed diminished at all. On top of my typical four 20 oz. water bottles I usually drink, I stopped and grabbed a 32 oz PowerAde, a 12 oz 7UP, and when I finished I drank more than 2 liters of water over the evening, plus a 12 oz Sierra Mist and two 12 oz adult beverages. This is a pretty typical fluid consumption picture for any given day.

Grand total: almost 7 liters of fluid.

Finally left the flats of Western and Central Kansas and entered into some rolling terrain again. Good to have some variation (and an opportunity to do some coasting and soft-pedaling!). I think Kansas is a beautiful state - good roads, super nice people, and very friendly cows.

These otherwise very busy Kansans will drop everything when you ride by. You pretty much become their first priority. I caused a herd about 10 miles East to stampede when I tried to take their picture. Something I said?

Amy finally caught up with me on my route when there was only about 4 miles to go to Cassoday. Excellent timing.

Cassoday Kansas has a population of about 100 (sadly doesn't qualify for state pool funding I guess) but an excellent little park that we're camped in right now. Today is the first night that we've had rain & thunderstorms in the entire trip (still haven't had ANY rain or weather while riding, knock on wood!). Tomorrow promises to be cooler so the rain's a welcomed feature.

We had no idea we were going to be spending the night on such hallowed ground.

What I've really been up to on this trip. Gonna have to get a "Chicken Jim" jersey made up special.
