 WHAT'S NEW AT APRICOT?

Mabel Brown and Ellyn Arwood have decided to revamp the clinical portion of APRICOT. Instead of having one-to-one therapy meetings on-site at the Clinic, they will be available for e-mail and phone consultations at $65 per hour; shorter consultations will be billed in quarter hour increments. Some school, home or agency consultations may be available and will be billed at half day and full day rates. When traveling outside the local area there may be charges for travel expenses. This new consultative direction for the Clinic is still under development, so as we work out the details, we will post them on the APRICOT website: www.apricot@spiritone.com

Ellyn will continue to present workshops during the school year. A schedule of these workshops is posted on our website. APRICOT will continue to produce and sell books and booklets related to using visual language as a part of living and learning. A new line of DVD classes is in the process of being developed…and we will post the availability of these products on our website in the future.

Mabel Brown can be reached at 503-670-1740 or through e-mail ( apricot@spiritone.com )

"Why do learning, language and behavioral differences occur?"

Learning, language and/or behavior differences occur when an
individual's learning system makes it difficult for the person to feel
successful within traditional educational settings.

" How is APRICOT, Inc. testing different from other testing services?"

First, our assessment process uses formal measures for data collection (language sampling and observable changes in behavior). This allows the evaluator to determine the client's best way of learning, the client's rate of learning, the client's learning system type, and the client's specific need for individualized compensatory strategies. This process differs from traditional standardized testing which typically results in a test score that is interpreted for academic and social concerns.

Secondly, our written report following the assessment will provide the client, parents, and/or follow up agencies with specific recommendations.

Thirdly, the assessment process is designed to determine the client's strengths, not weaknesses. Most school age clients leave the assessment standing taller and feeling better about who they are.

Fourthly, the assessments are meant to help find a way to assist in learning. Therefore, in addition to the report, follow up services are offered. For example, some clients need compensatory strategies for the following activities: reading, writing, spelling, comprehending, test taking, note taking, planning projects, doing homework, managing time, organizing self, doing multiple activities simultaneously, etc. However, this list is not meant to be all inclusive, and any given client's particular needs may vary significantly.
