Spasm for Domain Owners
Web Hosting customers have some different options in Spasm than other Spasm users. The first difference is the appearance of a drop-down menu at the top of the Spasm interface. This drop-down menu allows you to switch between Spasm settings for your SpiritOne.com address and Spasm settings for addresses at your domain(s). To switch from one to the other, just change the drop-down menu and hit any button on the Spasm interface (Mail Filters, Quarantine, etc...).
Beneath that drop-down menu will be another drop-down menu reading "[Global]" by default. If Enabled Virtual Domains is turned on in the Preferences screen, this drop-down menu will be populated by a list of all the email aliases for a domain. This drop-down menu allows you to switch between settings for individual aliases in Spasm.
Email Aliases
Only domain owners using our Basic Web Hosting service will ever see this button. The Email Aliases section of Spasm allows you to modify where virtual addresses go. Users of our Advanced Web Hosting services use their domain control panel to add and remove email addresses.
The majority of this screen is occupied by a list of aliases for a given domain. Each alias consists of two parts:
- Virtual Domain Address: This is the address at the domain which is to receive incoming mail.
- Delivered To: This is the target address for the email alias. Messages sent to the associated Virtual Domain Address will be delivered to the mailbox in this column. This address can be any email address, not just a SpiritOne mailbox.
Default Aliases
At the bottom of the alias list is the Current Default Alias. This displays the target mailbox for all email addresses in a domain not explicitly declared in the list of Virtual Domain Addresses appearing above it. This field should say something like "Error: User Unknown", meaning that any mail sent to undeclared aliases will bounce back to the sender with a "User Unknown" error message. This is a good thing, as it prevents you from receiving email sent to thousands of random email addresses when a spammer inevitably decides to do so.
The Change Default Alias button allows you to modify the default alias. Only error messages are allowed to be targets of default aliases. You can choose what you want the error message to say, but it must start with the text "error:".
Managing Aliases
New aliases are added using the Add New Alias button. Adding a new alias prompts you both for a Virtual Domain Address and a Deliver To address, both defined above.
Aliases can be removed or modified by selecting the radio button in front of the alias you want to change, then hitting either the Edit or Delete buttons.
Choosing Edit will prompt you for a new Destination Address. Only destination addresses can be changed using the Edit button. Changing the Virtual Domain Address requires creating a new alias.
Choosing Delete will remove an alias from the domain.
