2Wire 2700HG-D Setup

These configuration instructions will guide you through configuring your 2Wire Modem to work with your DSL Internet connection. You must set up the 2Wire modem before entering any information sent by our DSL department into your computer. This walkthrough assumes that your computer's network configurations are already set to use automatic and DHCP connections.

Check your Supplies

Before we begin, please make sure you have the following items available:

  • One (1) 2Wire 2700HG-D Modem, supplied by Qwest
  • One (1) black AC Power Adapter cable, supplied with the modem
  • One (1) gray telephone cable (RJ-11), supplied with the modem
  • One (1) yellow ethernet cable (RJ-45), supplied with the modem (only needed if you plan on using ethernet)
  • One (1) blue USB cable, supplied with the modem (only needed if you plan on using USB)

Wireless Note: If this is your first time setting up and you plan on using a wireless connection, you must still first physically connect with the ethernet or USB cable in order to perform this quick first-time setup. As such, make sure the required cables are there.

Connect the Cables

The first thing you should do is connect the black power adapter cable to the back of the 2Wire, and then connect the other end to a surge protector or walljack. Make sure the power switch on the back of the modem is set to the "on" position. The 2Wire should immediately begin it's power-up routine, which can take as long as two or three minutes. While it is doing this, the lights should blink a bit, and when the power light settles to a solid unblinking green, we're ready to continue.

Next, connect the telephone cable, plugging one end into the "Line" jack on the back of the 2Wire, and the other end into a telephone walljack in your location. The 2Wire modem comes with a handful of DSL filters for use on your phones, but you should not use one of these on the cable the connects the 2Wire! Once the cable is connected, the DSL light on the front of the modem may or may not solidify, but we are not concerned with that light at this moment, as we'll come back to it shortly.

Now you should connect the yellow ethernet cable (preferred). Connect one end of the cable to any of the four ethernet jacks on the back of the modem, and connect the other end to ethernet adapter on your computer.

Configure the 2Wire Modem

  1. With the ethernet cable connected, you should notice that one of the ethernet lights on the front of the modem is on, either solid or blinking. If this is so, we're ready to proceed.
  2. Your computer should be powered on and ready to go at this point. Open your web browser (Firefox, Safari, Netscape, Opera, Internet Explorer, etc) and type 192.168.0.1 in the address/URL bar at the top. This should take you to the following screen:
  3. If you do not see this screen, first check your cables to make sure you have a solid Ethernet light (any one of the four ethernet ports) on the 2Wire modem, then reboot your computer and try accessing the 2Wire modem again.
  4. You should now be at the main menu of the 2Wire Modem, with the "Network at a Glance" section prominently displayed. Look to the right side of the menu for a section entitled "Wizards." In that section, click on the Advanced Configuration Settings link. The following screen should now appear:
  5. If you are planning on using your modem to connect to a hardware router or a server, then scroll to the bottom and place a dot next to Transparent Bridging Mode, taking note of the information there and then clicking on the Save button, which pretty much concludes this walkthrough. If you are connecting to one or more computers without additional equipment, then continue with this walkthrough.
  6. In this menu, scroll down until you see the following section of information:
  7. Place a dot next to RFC 1483 Mode and make sure the drop-down next to Connection Type is set to Bridged. Place a dot next to Static and then fill out the information similar to that shown above. You should have been informed of your static IP and gateway address, but if not, give our tech support a call and they can give you the correct information for this step.
  8. Next, place a dot next to Specify DNS Server settings and fill out the Primary and Secondary DNS spots using the numbers exactly as shown above.

Read over the information you have typed, and when satisfied, click the Save button. If all goes correctly, the following screen should appear:
  9. And that's it! You should now be ready to surf the internet at any time you please. As DSL is an "always-on" connection, you don't have to worry about disconnecting your modem and "signing offline" ever again.
