Dear Concerned Citizen,
I am forwarding this material on the Community Project for At-Risk Youth's volunteer mentoring program for at-risk Portland eighth grade students. The Committed Partners for Youth (CPY) program supports and guides troubled young people and their parents in learning how to make positive life choices and changes. We are a volunteer intensive community building organization in which collaborative relationships are developed among at-risk youth, their families and teachers, as well their neighborhoods, local businesses, and the adults who serve as volunteer committed partner mentors.
Our program is adapted from a successful model used in 22 other U.S. cities and has already involved over 600 people locally. Over the last four years we served 100 youth at-risk of not completing the eighth grade plus their parents, teachers and adult committed partners in school / neighborhood communities where no other support programs of this nature were available. We are proud to report that over 90% of the students in our first two programs continued into high school! 71% of those youth (who were not even expected to finish the eighth grade) actually improved or maintained their grades.
We have launched the next group of 36 youth-adult partnerships with a 5-day residential retreat in May. This session began the year long, life-altering process for these at-risk youth, their parents, participating teachers and the adult committed partners. The total budget for this year long program is just under $140,000. We are proud to report significant contributions provided by our generous sponsors.
