Crew needed for scale logging and “the real thing.”  If you are inexperienced, we train.

Notice:  some of these activities are subject to change.  You would do well to verify before

traveling a long distance.  For these activities not near a restaurant, you are encouraged to bring a lunch.   We enjoy the lunch-time conversation.  If you can be added to my e-mail list, please let me know.  It will save me money.

DEER ISLAND 1/8 SCALE LOGGING

June 14 date is held open pending hearing from you. 1/8 scale size logging in the woods at Deer Island, Ore.   Alan & Paula’s place.   33678 Caanan Rd.  For those who wish to get their hands dirty, action includes steep ground, nettles, brush, and other hazards of real logging. We load to the railroad and lower cars, then dump the logs back into the canyon.

Notice:  We will do this on June 14 only if we are notified at least two weeks ahead, otherwise it will be a work party for the railroad.  [See below.] Note:  you must let us know if you are coming.  We need five people to run the show.

The Sept 13 date [noon till ___ ?] we will entertain the NATIONAL NARROW GAGE CONVENTION come hell or high-water, and we welcome your help to put this show on.  We hope to have the railroad in operation by then. We will also have railroad construction work parties between now and then.  We are happy to report the two trestles are done except for track. We are hoping to have the railroad in operation in time for the NATIONAL NARROW GAGE OPERATION in Sept.  We need your help. Work parties, other activities, and directions upon request.  We have scheduled days, but will be working others as well.   Ask for directions.  If you want to help, contact Merv.

DEER ISLAND WORK PARTY.  HELP WANTED!

May 17, Oct 4, other days to be arranged, mostly Mondays

We will lay track.  Both trestles done except for the rail.   If you are interested in helping out, contact me (Merv) 503-649-1732.  The locomotive shed/car barn is complete.  The turntable parts are complete, but not installed in the ground yet.  I have no idea how many will be coming at this point in time.  How much we accomplish depends on how many show up.  We want to get the track completed so we can run trains to the tail block.   We are hoping to complete the track in time for the National Narrow Gage Convention Sept 13.

Note: we might also work June 14 in lieu of a show day if we do not hear from you about doing our logging show.

THE REAL THING:

June 21&28  Rig-up days set aside for the “Real Thing.”  We will be rigging a new spar tree, and a good chance to have two steam donkeys in operation.   We welcome volunteers on the crew, and we will be stressing safety, hard hats for most jobs, gloves, caulks if you got ‘em, and we will provide a release of liability to be signed.  As of February, Mike’s “new” Willamette has a nearly completed 55 ft sled.  This one will be used as a yarder.  His Mack log truck will be there, along with one or more Cat 60’s plus a  Northwest shovel/grapple.  There will be other days previous to be arranged.

July 5&6   The “Real Thing.”   These days we will log in the woods.  Public hours: 10-5 on Sat, 1-5 on Sunday.  (The crew will be much earlier.)  90 Ft tree rigged for yarding and loading.  Two donkeys.  Same rules as above apply.  Notice:  if the weather gets too dry, we will be unable to log due to state forest regulations.  This would be a sad day, but we are at the mercy of mother-nature.    20902 Lucia Rd, Battleground, Wash. Area.  Contact Merv for directions, etc.

FOR ALL THE ABOVE, BRING A LUNCH.
